Hungarian Chicken Paprikash Recipe
Using fresh, organic ingredients is key in skin care and also plays a powerful role in making dishes filled with flavor and antioxidants – and since we’re paying homage to Hungarian tradition and farming practices it only makes sense to share one of the most beloved dishes of the country: Hungarian chicken paprikash.
A classic in Hungarian cooking, chicken paprikash is one of those one-pot meals that combine delicious ingredients into a single serving. Combining Hungarian paprika in addition to other traditional essentials such as peppers, onions, tomatoes and sour cream, chicken paprikash is the perfect meal when you want something flavorful, quick and hearty – especially in the cold winter months.
Why is Hungarian paprika recommended? While you can use regular paprika, Hungarian paprika comes in a range of heat levels to suit your tastes and adds a depth of smoky flavor you won’t get from the standard paprika. Can’t find it? Go with classic or Spanish varieties.
Like any traditional cuisine, you might find various recipes for chicken paprikash depending on which region or family of Hungary you refer to but one thing’s for sure: it’s all delightfully delicious! Spoon chicken paprikash over a starch of your choice – traditionally it’s served with nokedli which are like tiny dumplings but you can also go with your favorite noodles or rice, too! Cucumber and green salad are often served alongside, which offer even more freshness to the paprikash dish.
Zoltan Dobos, our Facility and Logistics Manager in Budapest, shares our love of the dish. His family eats it with “butter noodles and cucumber salad with sour cream next to it.”
Here is a recipe from The Spruce Eats, which features simple ingredients you can find anywhere:
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 whole chicken, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, seeded and diced
- 1 clove garlic, crushed
- 1 tablespoon Hungarian paprika
- Salt (½ teaspoon or to taste)
- Ground black pepper (¼ teaspoon or to taste)
- ¾ cup water
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Steps
- Heat butter in a dutch oven or large pan and sauté onion until translucent. Add chopped chicken pieces and sauté each side until golden brown.
- Add vegetables and seasoning to the pot. Stir in water and bring to a boil, then reduce to low and cook until chicken is tender.
- Once cooked thoroughly, remove chicken and vegetables and cover with foil to keep warm.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together sour cream and flour. Then add some of the pan juices to the sour cream mixture, while slowly bringing up the temperature (avoid curdling).
- Add the sour cream mixture to the pot and continue stirring until warmed completely, then add chicken and continue to gently stir and combine.
Serving
Use a ladle and add a generous portion to each bowl, then top with noodles or starch of your choice! However you decide to enjoy your meal, use organic ingredients to create classic and authentic dishes like chicken paprikash, lentil soup and even apple pie. This array of dishes should remind you that wellness and simplicity are here to stay and that we have much to do with keeping our earth thriving and healthy for a lifetime.

What is Organic Farming?
The term “organic” has become a buzzword over the years, but it really just means going back to the farm practices that have been used for centuries. There’s no use of GMOs (genetically-modified organisms), synthetic fertilizers or chemical pesticides. Instead, farmers use tried-and-true methods passed down from farmers in previous generations. Practices include companion planting, rotating crops and composting as a way to heal the earth through:
- Soil enrichment
- Water conservation
- Pollution reduction
The idea of organic farming is deeply ingrained in the history and culture of the Eminence Organics family – in the food they ate and the natural remedies they used everyday. But it’s more than just using a farm as a way to cultivate ingredients for skin care. Organic farming is an essential practice for many in Hungary, and it’s helped create a foundation for our products here at Eminence. Today, visitors to the Eminence Certified Organic Farm will see a beautiful landscape filled with nutrient-rich vegetables, fruits and herbs that grow in harmony with the season.
