Eminence Organic Skin Care takes tremendous pride in sharing our Hungarian culture with the world. As part of our award-winning design of the Eminence Certified Organic Farm, we have taken great care to share traditional structures, Biodynamic® and organic farming practices, earning acknowledgement as a local heritage landmark. As you meander around the beautiful farm, nestled in amongst the organic ingredients you will discover a traditional water well, grape press, chicken coop, and this week’s #FarmFeature, the lángos oven.
What is Lángos?
Lángos is Hungarian flat bread, and it is traditionally baked in the front of a brick oven, close to the flames. “Láng” means “flame” in Hungarian. The popular and delicious warm treat was traditionally served as breakfast on days when new bread was baked. It is seen as humble, simple food and is a delicious treat for our farm family to enjoy after a fulfilling day of working on the farm.
How is Lángos Served?
Lángos is best served fresh and warm, just out of the oven. The dough for lángos is made of water or milk and flour, yeast, sugar and salt. It can be served as savory or sweet. You can add sour cream, yoghurt or mashed potatoes to the dough, top with grated cheese, or simply rub with garlic butter. Other toppings include mushrooms, eggplant or cabbage. Sweet options include confectioner’s sugar or jam.
Where did Lángos come from?
In ancient Rome, panis focacius was a flat bread baked in the ashes of the fireplace. However, the modern lángos, despite its name, is often cooked in oil and fried.
The Eminence Certified Organic Farm wanted to ensure every detail is carefully and meticulously considered. Here, you’ll find a curated collection of items, including a hand-carved washboard from 1893 once used in nearby farm kitchens in Hungary. In the past, these handmade bowls would have been used for mixing the lángos dough, the woven water pitcher keeping water cool despite the noonday sun, and butter handmade in the wooden churn.
Eminence Organics: Hand-carved Details
No detail has been overlooked in the beauty and design of the Eminence Certified Organic Farm. Even the wooden posts and thatch roof support beams have been hand-carved with intricate, soothing patterns. The zig zag carvings are intended to represent the way sunrays shine down upon the earth. Once the lángos is nice and toasty, the smoke escapes through this little chimney. Traditional iron oven doors contrast against the stark, clean white of Hungarian carved plaster to symbolize abundance and health, encouraging the crops surrounding the structure to grow.
Our Eminence Organics caretakers regularly stock the woodpile with hand-cut branches to keep our lángos oven ready for cooking action!
