On the Eminence Certified Organic Farm, we pride ourselves on using organic and biodynamic farming methods to grow the purest, most natural ingredients. As the number of genetically modified crops grown worldwide increases, educating consumers about the ingredients found in their food – and skin care – becomes ever more important. We believe in providing consumers with the knowledge they need to make clear and informed purchasing decisions. This is why we value the European Union’s rules and restrictions for labeling GMOs.
What Are GMOs?
In agriculture, GMOs are crops with DNA that has been artificially manipulated through genetic engineering. This is often done in an effort to achieve a favorable characteristic the plant would not otherwise possess. For example, many GMO fruits and vegetables are modified to resist disease, increase crop yield and even extend shelf life. While GMOs have largely been developed to help plants become more resilient, genetic modification is an ongoing experiment; the scientific community still does not understand many of the implications or potential side effects of genetically modified organisms. Due to this uncertainty, governments around the world have developed legislation requiring that consumers be informed of the inclusion of GMOs in food.
GMO Labels In The European Union
As a company, we approve of the European Union’s labeling requirements for GMOs. Oft-cited as the strictest in the world, the EU’s labeling policies are designed to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions regarding genetically modified products. According to the European Commission:
In the case of pre-packaged GM food/feed products, the list of ingredients must indicate “genetically modified” or “produced from genetically modified [name of the organism].” In the case of products without packaging these words must still be clearly displayed in close proximity to the product (e.g. a note on the supermarket shelf).
GMO-Free Hungary
Agriculture has always been an important and competitive part of the Hungarian economy, with over 70% of our land area suitable for farming. We are proud that Hungary has been a leader in promoting natural agriculture, going above-and-beyond the European Union’s anti-GMO labeling requirements. Cultivation of GMOs is prohibited in Hungary, and keeping the country GMO-free is even included in Hungary’s constitution. The Hungarian Farm Minister has called for GMO-free zones in the country and even mounted the “Alliance for a GMO-free Europe” initiative to encourage the entire European Union to become GMO-free.
Organic Skin Care Ingredients
We are incredibly proud that the country we call home has taken a stance to protect the integrity of our natural, organic and biodynamic ingredients. For nearly sixty years, generations of estheticians in the Koronczay family have handcrafted skin care products from the potent and nutritious fruits, herbs and vegetables grown in the farmlands of Hungary. Not only are our ingredients incredibly vitamin and nutrient-rich, they are also GMO-free. We believe in the basics: pure, potent and organic ingredients that enhance your wellbeing, naturally.
