This small plaque says the name “Stephen (István) Röck” – the manufacturer who built this grape press, most likely between 1841 and 1872. The Röck family was famous for designing quality, innovative farm equipment in the 19th century and were one of the first families to build steam generators in Hungary.

The “wooden cage” is a classic component of grape presses from this time period. Refinished in the original, grass green, strong iron holds together the wooden bands. The color variation in the wooden slats is a true testament to the age and actual use of the grape press for decades.

A thatch roof is a common sight in the farmlands of Hungary. Made from strong grass reeds, thatch is gathered together, then sliced to the exact length needed for the roof’s design. Thatch roofs are a theme at the Eminence Organic Skin Care farm, both as a tribute to ancient Hungarians and the sunlight. Hungarians believe that a thatch roof calls upon sunlight because the hollow grass reeds grow “up” to the sun, and the sun is able to shine through the center of these reeds.
