Water Well

Soaring high over the farmlands, our traditional water well rises over 7 meters into the air. Designed in authentic Hungarian style, this well is placed at the idyllic center of our Eminence Organic Skin Care farm.

The water pail

Handmade from 33 pieces of wood, (32 ‘staves’ and 1 round wooden bottom), this water pail was recreated based on traditional Hungarian design. While a pail can be as big around as you like, simply by adding more ‘staves,’ the generally accepted belief is that 32 staves create the most perfectly round shape.

Did you know...

Hungary is considered the thermal spring water capital of the world? Although you don’t necessarily want to drink thermal spring water (which often has high, naturally-occurring sulfur content), it is extremely beneficial for bathing. Don’t bathe in a well though! Hungarian water wells extend dozens of feet below the earth’s surface to draw upon the freshest, best-tasting, drinkable water.

Traditional Crane

Rather than rely on a hand crank (as seen in most traditional North American water wells), Hungarians used a crane and lever system. This means that the pail would lower into the well, fill with water, and one “heave-ho!” later, the full pail would rise to the top.

As Strong as an Oak

As far back as Neolithic times, oak has been used to line water wells in the Hungarian countryside. Oak is an ideal wood for this project, strong, sturdy and, most importantly, water-resistant.
